Match Analysis

India Finish at 264/4 Despite Pant’s Injury Scare

India weathered the storm on a dramatic opening day at Old Trafford, finishing at 264/4 against England. The day had it all, good batting, crucial wickets and a Pant injury scare that has fans worried.

The morning session saw India’s openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul take on a tight England attack led by Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer. Jaiswal, who survived a few edges, grew in confidence and smashed boundaries and a beautiful upper-cut off Ben Stokes to reach 58.

Rahul’s 46 was the anchor of a 94-run opening stand, India’s highest this series. But England struck back after lunch with Woakes removing Rahul with an edge to slip and then Liam Dawson getting Jaiswal who edged to slip after reaching his fifty.

Stokes then got Shubman Gill lbw for 12 and India were 149/3 by tea. Sai Sudharsan, who made his mark at No. 3 and Pant steadied the ship in the final session and took India past 200 with a 50-plus partnership.

Sudharsan’s 61 included some beautiful pulls off Archer’s short balls while Pant’s 34 had a swept four and a towering six. Disaster struck when Pant was hit on the foot by a Woakes delivery and limped off in pain.

Sudharsan fell late to Stokes’ short ball tactic, top-edging to fine leg but Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten cameo with some crisp boundaries ensured India finished strongly despite light fading in and play being called off early.
