South Africa vs Afghanistan Champions Trophy 3rd Match Highlights
South Africa secured a dominant 107-run victory against Afghanistan in their Champions Trophy 2025 opener in Karachi. Batting first, South Africa posted a strong total of 315 runs.
Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a brilliant 103, supported by Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram, who both scored 52 runs. Temba Bavuma also contributed with a steady half-century.
Rickelton played a well-planned innings, using a mix of aggressive and smart batting. He found boundaries early, especially against fast bowlers, and handled the spinners well. Bavuma provided stability by rotating the strike.
Afghanistan’s experienced spinner, Mohammad Nabi, took two wickets, including Bavuma’s, but South Africa kept the momentum going. Rickelton reached his century in 101 balls but was later run out in an unfortunate dismissal.
Even without Heinrich Klaasen due to injury, South Africa continued to score freely. Van der Dussen and Markram played attacking cricket, ensuring the team crossed the 300-run mark. Markram’s quick 52* helped in the final push.
Afghanistan struggled in the chase. Their top order collapsed early, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran falling cheaply. By the 15th over, Afghanistan had lost four wickets for just 51 runs.
Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder led the bowling attack, making scoring difficult. Marco Jansen contributed with a sharp run-out.
Despite the poor start, Rahmat Shah fought back with a brave 90, hitting nine fours and a six. However, he lacked support from other batters. Afghanistan eventually got bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs, falling well short of the target.
South Africa’s bowlers performed well, with Rabada taking 3 wickets and Mulder grabbing 2. Their disciplined bowling ensured a comfortable win.
This victory gave South Africa a strong start in the tournament, while Afghanistan faced a tough lesson in their debut Champions Trophy match.
